Based on the Tony-nominated play by George Bernard Shaw, Major Barbara  tells the story of a wildly idealistic young woman, Barbara Undershaft, who helps the poor as a Salvation Army Major at a topsy-turvy anything-goes homeless shelter. She's a stalwart devotee to the cause and has visions for the place - although her ambitions are often squashed by a lack of funding.

 

For years Barbara and her siblings, Sarah and Stephen, have been estranged from their billionaire father. But when the biting matriarch of the family, Lady Britomart, discovers her settlement has run dry, she calls for an emergency family reunion with their dad, Andrew Undershaft as the guest of honor.

 

Over dinner, the family attempts to woo Undershaft with compliments and talk of politics. Only Barbara refuses to play along, instead criticizing his choices- after all, Undershaft isn't just wealthy, he's the world's leading arms maker, and his blood money is of little interest to her. This intrigues Undershaft. Facing Barbara's disapproval and her confidence that she can save Undershaft’s soul, he proposes that the family visit the shelter in exchange for a trip to his arms factory. Only then can they determine who is right and who is wrong - and whether the family will be saved from financial ruin.​​
